Song of the Day: A hard rain's a gonna fall byBob Dylan:
Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
And where have you been my darling young one?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans
I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.
One of my favorite Dylan songs. Recorded by many over the years, but one of the best is Leon Russell.
It was a lousy day for hiking! Cold and rainy. It rained during the night and continued throughout the day. The path was very slippery and muddy, particularly downhill on rocks. And, the plants were very wet. We wore our ponchos for protection, but you can only do so much. Just not a fun hiking day. On several occasions where we had a choice between walking on a road vs taking a trail, we took the Road. Fortunately, this was our shortest day yet, so we were out of misery somewhat quickly.
By the time we arrived at our hotel, we were wet and tired. We both have waterproof shoes, but when your pant legs are sopping wet, water tends to get inside your shoes. We were very happy to be inside out of the rain. Unfortunately, the outlook is for more of the same the next several days. From what we can tell, virtually all of Italy is getting rained on right now, so nowhere to hide!

We are staying at the village of Caprese Michelangelo. The town was originally named Caprese, but renamed itself in the early 1900's in honor of the sculptur Michelangelo, who was born here. As we were later to find out when we visited the local Michelangelo museum, he only lived here two years, and then moved to Foorence. The museum included the birthplace of Michelangelo, but really wasn't all that interesting. Here is the home where he was born:

We ended up having two very good meals at the hotel here. Many of the dishes included mushrooms or truffles, which are apparently harvested locally and are in season. We met several people from Austria who are staying at our hotel and are also hiking the same trail we are. They had been on the trail for several weeks. They said they hike 2-4 weeks each year, and simply started the following year wherever they left off the prior year.
Tomorrow we have a hike of about 16 or 17 miles. Mostly downhill, but will be in rain. For the past two days, we have not gotten lost onc! This is a real accomplishment after the first several days. Let's hope we can continue our record tomorrow.
By the way, apparently Louie Armstrong Isn't welcome in this town....here's a sign at the entrance to town telling Louie to stay out:
